2007-2008 League Week 1
In Division I, Nomads opened their season with a strong team performance in winning against a three-man Aldersgate. Allsorts fielded 3 former Mastermind Champions (Kevin Ashman, Gavin Fuller and Chris Hughes), surely a first for any Quiz League, for the repeat of last season's Cup Final against old rivals Atletico. After 6 rounds Allsorts seemed to be cruising to victory, but a dramatic turn round over the last two rounds saw Atletico claim a very satisfying win. Last season's Champions Broken Hearts took on last season's Division II champions Barb. After a close first half, with Barb briefly in front, Broken Hearts took a decisive lead in rounds 5 & 6 to take the match. Old Itonians drew steadily away from Telstars, and held an unassailable lead going into the final round. With a strong sense of déjà vu I record that Kevin Ashman was the Division's top scorer, his 21 points for Allsorts including a full house.
In Division II, Belly gradually pulled away from Rosslyn Park to open their season with a comfortable win. The relegated and renamed Gray Monks hosted Pineapple, who with former Rising Son Martin Smith now on board, built on last season's experience to take the victory in a close game. However the closest game of the night was in Richmond, where London Scottish recovered from a disastrous first round against Accrington Cylindricals to take the lead early in the second half, then had to rally again in the last round to claim a draw. In the week's final game, Waterloo Sunset, inspired by a 24 point performance by Quentin Holt, proved too strong for the Ovalytes. Quentin's score was the League's best of the night.
