The Summer Friendly League ("SFL") was introduced at the end of the 2008-09 season.
The SFL gives everyone – new players and existing players alike – an opportunity to quiz during what would otherwise be a long break between seasons.
The format of matches is, and the rules for matches are, by and large the same as in the League Championship aka Winter League.
See the Quiz League of London's
Rules of Play for more details.
However, there are a number of differences between Winter League and the SFL.
With the SFL, teams exist only for one summer, with those who volunteer to be secretaries picking their squads from registered players at a draft night in early June.
Secondly, every player is assigned a starting score for the summer, with scores calculated on the basis of experience and form.
So, if you've never or rarely quizzed before, fear not - you'll most likely begin games with a head start on more experienced players.
Thirdly, teams get not one but two matches every Tuesday.
In SFL, players are not required to seek Committee approval to play for different teams.
However, players who play for other teams (e.g. where a team is short of players one evening) do not take their starting score with them.
Furthermore, players who have played more than a set number of matches for their team over the course of the summer will thereafter have their starting score reduced by five.
SFL is a great way for people new to team quizzing to discover how our matches work, and for existing players to meet and play with (and against!) people they may not encounter in the Winter League.
Registration is now open for the 2025 SFL.

There's no fee and you don't need to be available for the whole summer to register – just give your estimated availability, as a percentage, when completing the form.
