2008 National Team Quizzing Festival
The 19th Annual National Quizzing Festival took place at
The Counting House in Cornhill on Saturday 14th June. A group of enthusiastic quizzers, several of whom were new to QLL events, assembled for a full day of quizzing.
Rally Quiz
The day started off with the fourth running of the individual Rally Quiz, which required competitors to exercise judgement in deciding whether to stop answering questions and try for time bonuses, or to keep answering and take a risk of time penalties.
The question sets (provided by
Donald Yule, available
here) proved to be balanced and testing, and the inclusion of the timing element saw different strategies come into play. Some competitors opting for fast times while others took a more measured approach.
The winner was
Kevin Ashman on 112 with
Gavin Fuller the runner up for the second year running on 103.
Paul Steeples took third place with a fine score of 99. Full results
here and full analysis
here.
Special mention should also go to those who scored "solos" and were the only person to answer a particular question. They were:
Tony Allen (Stage 1 – Question 32)
Mark Grant (Stage 2 – Question 5)
Kevin Ashman (Stage 2 – Question 8)
Paul Steeples (Stage 3 – Question 24)
Kathryn Johnson (Stage 3 – Question 32)
Only two questions went unanswered by anybody out of 120 reflecting a fine effort from the question setter.
Don Bissett Memorial Cup
Played between the
Sussex team who are the current holders of the President’s Cup and a scratch team nominally representing the North. Victory went to Sussex to keep the trophy in the South for the next year.

Thanks
The League would like to thank everyone who made the day such a success: all the question writers, the staff at the Counting House, Fullers for providing prizes, those who acted as match officials, the organisers and not least all the competitors. Without all of these people the day would not have been possible. Thank you all.
