2009-2010 League Week 21

Week 20    Week 2202 Mar 2010

Congratulations to Broken Hearts, who sealed their third QLL championship in four years with an emphatic bonus-point win over Old Itonians. Ian Bayley's full house was the icing on what I'm sure was a pretty tasty cake. BH lost two of their first four fixtures this season, but didn't lose another, and proved untouchable on the run-in, extracting round-houses and individual full houses seemingly at will. In fact, most of the final positions in Division One were decided in Round 21, with a game still to play. There's a cliché in Spanish football which says that you have to just fall short before you can win - will this be the case with Pericardium? David Stainer's crew will finish second this year but are sure to be stronger for the experience. Nomads' defence of their title ends in third place, with a round-house bonus putting them beyond the reach of Atletico, despite the latter's 49-41 win. The Streathamites will finish fourth. Kevin Ashman top-scored this week, with 23 and a full-house, in Allsorts' defeat of Telstars. Gavin Fuller's 20 would be good enough for top spot most weeks, but not this time. Allsorts can still catch Old Itonians for fifth if they beat them at the Old Star tonight and bonus points fall correctly. Barb scored a round-house and had all four in double figures (the only team to achieve this on what I think was the hardest set of the season, though I've not done the comparisons to back that up) in their defeat of Pineapple, which almost certainly keeps them safe in the top flight next season. Waterloo Sunset condemned Five Bells to bottom spot, overcoming the handicap of an empty chair in the process.

Gray Monks win Division Two, thanks to a victory over Outcasts described by one of their number as 'workmanlike'. At the end of the day, the lads put in 110% and they will, no doubt, be over the moon to test their skills in the top flight next season - richly deserved after an excellent campaign. Although league reorganisation means that they will remain in division 2 next season, Banana Splits secured second with a narrow win over Rosslyn Park, who took a point for the close loss. That result also means that third remains up for grabs, with the winner of tonight's game between Eclectics and Accies still able to catch Park. Accies got into this position by beating London Scottish, while Eclectics deserve a mention (despite not playing on Round 21) for offering Mark Rae and Ian Griffiths, two of the league's younger and newer members, to reader a game each. That's the spirit that makes the league work, so take a bow, you two. Remember, if you have a bye, there's often someone looking for an official, so you can make the world a better place by volunteering. Elsewhere, Sons of the Dessert rounded off their debut season with a three-point win over Mealy Bugs, while over in Docklands, Wharfside and Ovalytes fought out a draw, the tenth in the league this season. Colin Kidd's 22 for Wharfside was the division's top score.
